01L/19R Dredging and Reclamation Works

Dredging and land reclamation works for the new parallel runway 01L/19R are set to commence soon with the dredge boat, Charles Darwin expected to arrive from Singapore late this month. The Charles Darwin will scoop up sand from an area called Middle Banks in Moreton Bay and transport it to a temporary mooring at the mouth of the Brisbane River. From there the sand slurry is pumped to the parallel runway site along a 5km steel pipeline which will run along the north or runway 19 and under runway 14/32.

Dredging will take approximately 18 months transporting 13 million cubic meters of sand required to fill and consolidate the parallel runway site for pavement and runway construction. Photos will be posted on this blog of the parallel runway site every 4-6 months.
